The Great Blizzard of 2010
This past few days have been very kind to us. Even though the winds were not kind to many of our shots we still managed to find a few protected spots. Unfortunately the mountains did not get as much snow as the Champlain Valley but its kind of hard to ski in a farm field so we made the best of it.
Blower and (then) Bluebird
I just got back from an extended yurt trip somewhere in Utah (sorry, but I was sworn to secrecy… I swear!), and am back on the update parade. Over at the yurt it snowed almost non-stop with just the occasional break in the clouds to reveal the full-to-near-full moon, as an unusual south west wind pummeled the ridge we called home for several days. Up in the mountains we found acres upon acres upon acres of no skill powder terrain.
This is one of about 500 million open powder meadow shots from the trip. I would have taken more, but two batteries only last so long in the backcountry!
After our yurt trip at unsaid place in Utah, we returned to a very calm and settled Little Cottonwood Canyon. Aspects from west through south through north east were skiing unbelievably well and safely. East through north east contained blower snow. West through south through east contained a punchy wind buff.

Today is a down day, and I will finally be getting in a resort day tomorrow… first day at the resort in over a week! Hoping the forecast 6-8″ turns into a lake effect/LCC enhanced baker’s foot! Go git sum my fellow right coasters! I heard you made out quite well.
Weather blather: Week of 1/4/10
Well Debbie did her thing for sure and hopefully all of you are enjoying the snow (that is if you can find it after the winds hammered all day Sunday). Debbie was a real mess from a forecast standpoint. When I said 18 was in play in certain spots along the Greens I thought i was going to look like a fool when all was said and done as totals would be way less… thank goodness that wasn’t the case. What a system! Now that it’s out of the way, lets take a look ahead to see what’s coming this week.

My Apologies–I Digress
Sorry to take your attention away from the main event, but the Wasatch delivered today. We couldn’t get into anything too serious due to rapid snowfall rates and near zero visibility, but a little across-the-road-backcountry near Alta turned into face shot central. We headed up from the car just as the storm out here was getting going–6″ on the ground–and by the time we reached the ridge we were at well over a foot. Pockets of 18″ existed. Tunnel vision top to bottom.
Porter checking the stability… the snow liked to billow into the face… very dangerous
KC remembers why we took the early flight… wake up in NJ… face shots in UT.
Good luck right-coasters with the New Year’s storm. I am crossing my fingers for a baker’s meter! Out here in Utah we’ll be on a hut trip to ring in the new year. I’ll post up more shots and mini-TRs as we ski along. Eventually I’ll make an amalgam of a TR. Thanks for staying tuned to FIS!
Potential for New Year’s Day Nor’easter (updated 1/3/10)
By the time the ball drops, you look for somebody to kiss and start to regret having the filet, you’ll know whether Crystal or Andre will be the bottle to pop open. (If you don’t know what Andre is well – good for you. You obviously never tried to hold it down the next morning on a crosstown bus.) Why? Because as the year winds down a significant winter storm will be winding up.
