Potential for Heavy Pocono and Catskill weekend snow (UPDATE 12/19)
Two weeks ago I wrote about a storm that “wouldn’t go away” and refused to slide off the coast. Well damnit all if we don’t have another one on our hands. Same story. Up until just a few days ago this storm was progged to slide right off the coast. Sure it would hammer NC, VA and the midatlantic but do we care about that? No, we don’t.
HOWEVER in the last 24 hours or so models have really accelerated two important trends. 1. A trend to the NW and 2. An intensification of moisture with the system.
I’d ingore this if this wasn’t EXACTLY WHAT EVERY STORM THIS WINTER HAS DONE. Looking at all the potential in the atmosphere when coupled with this trend means that we need to be vigilant with this system. This is like a guy in critical condition. 24/7 supervision, check the charts every hour, examine everything. This could blow Up…now will it?

Weather blather for the Holidays: Cold (not coal) then what? UPDATED 12/18
Since I’ve gotten my xmas shopping done (Sorry kiddo, not every kiss begins with Kay….) I figured it was time take a look at the weather for next week as I’m sure many of you are wondering if you’ll get some powder under the tree this year (or menorah or Kinara -look it up- or aluminum pole).

Greg just entered the Teton Gravity Research photo contest. Click on the picture below, and VOTE (a 10 is the highest):
If we win, two of us will go on a Heli Skiing trip to Alaska!
Sam will get his entry up in a minute. You can vote for both, and as often as you like!
POV FAQ
There have been a few questions lately as to which POV camera I am using I wanted to clear those up and provide a little feedback. I am currently using the Viosport POV1 Wide Angle. More info about the camera can be found here.
The Viosport is not the perfect camera. I have had quality and exposure issues with it and it is quite expensive. One of the greatest draws for me though is the toughness of the lens and imager, as well as the low profile the camera takes up on the helmet. This might not seem like a big deal but I’m sure if I used the Go Pro I would have cleaned it off my helmet with a branch long ago. The viosport is very easy to use and its nice that it runs off of 4 AA’s, so its easy to deal with batteries. Unfortunately the remote can’t be trusted so recording needs to be turned on using the main unit. I will generally record whole runs then cut out most of it, the only downside to this is wasting batteries. The main unit is gernarally very solid and durable however there are some small parts such as the memory card cover that routinely break.
I do all of my editing on my Macbook Pro in a quicktime format using Final Cut Pro. I compress the files for internet viewing using Quicktime Pro and finally I use Vimeo to host the videos online. I still have a lot to learn about video formats and compression, its a complex world.
For better or worse I have been using the Viosport POV for over a year now and it has treated me well.
Here is the highlight reel from last season:
As Christmas approaches I see a HD camcorder in my future so I can get some higher quality footage from different angles and take FIS video beyond POV.
TR: VTah Part III – The Most Unreliable Great Snow on Earth!
An historic band of lake effect snow came hurtling off Lake Ontario, and temporarily transported Mad River Glen to Utah. We got lucky, and were on hand to ski it.
