Finally after weeks of boredom we may actually have something of importance occur weather-wise.  The jury is still out this storm but the potential for is there for a long-duration precipitation event across the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and White Mountains from Friday through Saturday night.  While track and storm strength are still up in the air, I have high confidence in at least some accumulating snows across the mountains of northern New England and northern NY.

Weather Page Redesigned (again)

In the absence of snow, I just wanted to formally announce that we’ve redesigned the weather page (yet again). The most striking change is the easier-to-access positioning of Lionel and Scott’s blogs. Hopefully this removes any confusion. At the same time, we also moved the visual products box down and widened it, allowing you to have a better view of everything in there.

The biggest change however is the inclusion of about FIVE MORE locations that are now streaming current conditions to the site (Catskill folk: you are now covered). This not only allows you to check out conditions all in one place, but also can give you insight into whether or not an inversion or some other elevation-dependent weather phenomenon is developing as elevations of all the weather sites are the first piece of information under the location. Let the prognostication begin.

Finally we also added a bunch more webcams below the current observations. Expect these to move in the next few weeks when we reorganize the visual products and text products into something a bit easier to understand and get you to the information you need.

As always, contact us if something is wrong, or if you have any suggestions about how to improve the site to make it easier to use.

STOKE (from the newly added TR “Presidents Weekend in Shambala” from the backlog of stuff slowly making its way to it’s final resting place here on FIS).

PS: We finally figured out how to get our comments “threaded”… check them out by clicking the link just below and to the left… hope they help with the discussion you’re itching to discuss.

That’s the question I’m getting asked these days and it’s a pretty valid question given the fact that pretty much all of the planned November 21st openings here in Vermont have now been delayed (ie. Okemo, Sugarbush, Stowe, Mt Snow, etc).  Before I get into it, props need to go out to Sunday River who has managed to stay open for nearly a month now.  I have no idea how they have pulled that off in this weather pattern that is about as unfavorable as it gets: +AO/+NAO couplet with a massive vortex in the Gulf of Alaska pumping mild Pacific air from the West Coast of the U.S. up to James Bay in Canada.  This does not allow any cold air to get anywhere near the Northeastern U.S. but the end of this pattern is coming relatively soon.

We will endure one more week to week and a half of frustratingly mild weather before we start to see changes around Thanksgiving/Thanksgiving weekend…though it’ll probably take till after the Thanksgiving weekend before we have a shot at anything truly cold.

New analog years showing up: 2002-2003, 2004-2005 and 2006-2007. What does this mean for winter?

Look after the jump to see NWS starting to agree that a colder period should arrive around Thanksgiving.
As my office building creaks and groans in the midst of this wasted ‘Noreaster I decided to take a minute to look ahead to Thanksgiving weekend.

For many ski areas “black Friday” has become the targeted opening day. Why? Well several reasons. It’s late enough to allow for consistent nighttime snowmaking leading up the day, people are off work and able to ski, and it’s a month before the make or break holiday season. Gotta get people in the mood for skiing if you want them to shell out the green over Xmas. As most of us don’t hike a few thousand vertical feet in October to trash up some skis on three inches of slush like these FIS yahoos do, the Black Friday also marks the opening day of our season. With that in mind I bet many of you are thinking “Will there be any snow?” My answer: I have no idea.
