Cinco Pow Mayo (or: Combo Number Five)
Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, May Snow Plowers… however you want to make a joke about it, it snowed schuss-worthy amounts in the first week of May (again) this year in two different jurisdictions of the FIS. The Utah and Vermont bureaus both got treated to a late season round of snow! In Vermont, Lionel wrote up that we had a little snowfall event to enjoy coming our way. In Utah, although Lionel wasn’t writing about a snowfall-event in the making, Ben and Porter knew it was going to snow because of a super top secret that we’re going to let you in on: it always snows in Utah. This quick update is a combo of those two. Being they were both from around cinco de mayo, this is Combo Number Five. (click on that youtube link for some tunes)
In Vermont, here’s Christian and Matt getting ready to drop. As Christian got himself together though, suddenly he broke out into song. “Ladies and gentleman. This is combo number five,” sang Christian.
“One…two…three four five.”
“Everybody in the skin track come on, let’s ride.”
***insert a bunch of lyrics I don’t have the time to mimic with witty ski related phrases***
“….spray snow…. when you slay snow….”
“A little bit of rock walled chute in my life”
“A little bit of pow slash in the sun”
“A little bit (more) pow slash, it’s fun.”
“A little bit of open meadow skipping on a ski run”
“A little bit of pow skiing all day long”
“A little bit of pow surfing in the sun”
“A little bit of turn earning for this run.”
“Combo number five.”
Which coast is that last picture from? It’s hard to tell in this Combo Number Five. Thanks for reading FIS!!
Mother Nature Comes Out For Mother’s Day
I don’t know what it is about the Mother’s day period. Maybe Ullr’s mom likes to shuss. IDK. Whatever it is, I strongly think some uppper elevation pows are on the way. Just like last year.
Gonna keep this simple because after this winter, LH needs a break.
Here’s the deal, along the front that’s bringing epic amounts of rain, a wave of low pressure will deepen. As it does and moves N/NE through Maine a broad NW flow will set up behind it. Classic upslope pattern ensues. With sufficent cold air from about 2500 Ft up snow is likely from really tonight through friday am. I check some data and the omega signature isn’t perfect but with the NW winds I don’t really care what the model tells me. I know where that air is going when it hits the Greens and Northern Slopes of the ADK (Lyon mtn). It’s going up. And that’s good.
Totals…oh really does it matter? Its MAY and I’m talking about upslope snow. Go up there and TELL me how much it snowed!!!
Srsly though it could be plenty to have some fun with!
TR: 6/2(1+2)=HIGH FIVES
There’s a PEMDAS challenge floating around the internet. I think we’ve figured it out. The answer is a HIGH FIVE!
Click the picture or here to read 6/2(1+2)=HIGH FIVES
Here on the east coast, sometimes spring skiing consists of a mellow cruise down a long-closed ski trail, a mile long, and covered with wall to wall peel away corn. In these cases, the only natural reaction is a “high five,” as Christian demonstrates here.
Then other times on the east coast, spring skiing consists of going down something so darn steep and scary, the only natural reaction is a “high five”… of the snow cause it’s right in your face. See the picture below where HighAnxietyFilm’s Chris Nelson is snowboarding the mega gnar and high five-ing the snow in New Hampshire:
It’s pretty epic out there folks!! Gogh Git Sum!! Check back tomorrow for a full TR!
Baker Update
Ever since our Spearhead trip, winter has been back in the PNW. Lucky for us, the resort is now closed for the season even as snow totals are still rising.
It blows me away that the resort has closed when there is this much snow still left.
Allen finds himself in a tight spot
Mason was close behind
And finally, the best for last. We drove up to the mountain today expecting a few new inches of snow, but instead found this:
Mason found himself in another predicament…
…but the pay off was worth it.
