Allen made a video:

With massive accumulations (50-70in in 36hrs) in the forecast for Mt. Baker (the volcano), Allen and I decided to head up to the Baker ski area to see how things were doing. It had been raining hard at lower elevations for the entire day, and we had high hopes as we headed out to see if we could make some soft-snow turns for the first time this season.

We heard a ski area in North America opened up this past weekend, and we headed out to find it. The only problem is we didn’t know where to look! Masters of logic that we all are, we put our heads together (ouch!) and came up with the following trip for your reading pleasure.

Wakin’ Up Winter

CAW CAW CAW.

Phew.  Dwyer and I were starting to think that it might only snow in New England this year.  Waking up Saturday morning, it was a balmy 55 degrees in Salt Lake City.  Before dawn we headed to one of the yearly pilgrimages – the annual ski swap at Black Diamond.  This is a ski swap like no other you’ll ever attend.  Cars start piling into the BD parking lot at 5 AM for a coveted tail gate sales spot.  The swap is more reminiscent of a Patriots tailgating party than a ski swap.

Ski bums, semi-pros, and photographers all rumble around selling gently used gear for a steal of a price.  In one row of cars I saw Lee Cohen, Steve Lloyd, and Justin Altman all set up.  It was like photographer alley!

With sunny skis and a few inches of new snow from the past few days, Saturday seemed like a perfect day to pay a visit to an old friend. We made the pilgrimage to one of our favorite spots and, much to our surprise, got to do more than just lounge about.

Alpine powder in October? Yes please!

As you know, i’m Bi. No…not like that…settle down there all you bears….I’m a bi-forecaster. As much as I love tracking and predicting the Northeast’s amazing weather and super storms, I also have a fondness for the sheer weather insanity that is Little Cottonwood Canyon. To be blunt with you, from my analysis of the weather patterns and geography, NOWHERE in the continental U.S. is a better, more consistent snow producer than that damn box canyon. (Maybe parts of Alaska compare but that’s a maritime snow pack so we can debate). The dynamics of LCC are not repeated anywhere else. If you disagree, feel free to comment below but I warn you- you better bring the ammo with you.

So with that said, I love watching and discussing the weather in Little Cottonwood and Big Cottonwood Canyon. While it’s a little harder to nail down than the weather on E.C. I nevertheless love to write about it, and starting on Saturday the little canyon that could will give us something to talk about. Tittyballs!
