TR: Unbusted
For the past 98 days I’ve had one thing on my mind. “When was I going to be able to get up into the Argenta slide path of Big Cottonwood Canyon and rescue the ski I’d lost their in my ankle breaking accident on April Fools Day.” We gathered up a crew of ski huntin’ maniacs and went after it.

Summer Series: Weekend of July 8-11
It’s been hot. Record hot. In fact the last time it was this hot in July, was 1988. So of course being a winter obsessed I wanted to see what the winter of 1988-89 was like. Starting with the Mt. Manny snow depth we see that it featured generally above average snow depths:
Looking at some teleconnection numbers, however, it seems that winter wasn’t particularly harsh:
AO for Jan 1989-March 1989: 3.106, 3.279 1.530
NAO for Jan 1989- March 1989: 1.17 2.00 1.85
Now without getting crazy and throwing around more numbers (as I’m prone to do), the best I can say is that there is little correlation between a record heat wave and the following winter. There is much better correlations between the number of 90+ degree days and the following winter, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. On to the weekend!

July 5 – Mostly Sunny with accumulations of .5-1 inch
Well, Allen finally arrived in WA a few days ago, and in the hopes of getting him up something cool before he started to resent me for talking him into moving out here, I suggested we give Baker a shot. We were supposed to have nice warm weather all week, but in the interest of not dying in a slurpy-lanche, I thought that it would be a good idea to go up today (forecast: mostly sunny, cool) versus tomorrow (Sunny, hot).
Half an hour from the house, and we were at the trailhead getting prepped to hike the ~2 miles up to snowline. The thin cloud layer above us looked reasonably high up and we were excited for the day. By the time we reached snowline however, the clouds had gotten much thicker and lower on the mountain.
“You told me it was going to be sunny”
“It will be, just keep breaking that skin track”

Happy 234th Birthday United States!
As a birthday present to you U.S.A. here’s a little report from February 4th, 2010; 5 months apart on calendar, but thousands of miles apart in season. A few are repeats from VTah IV, and the quick update that Ben put up on February 5th, but I think every winter-addicted person out there can use a little stoke on a hot summer day like today.
